Tool 2: Evaluating Site Context
Reuse opportunities are heavily affected by what is taking place around the site. Any reuse of a site should be one that benefits the surrounding area; as a result, it is critical to analyze the site surroundings to determine what uses – and what design ground rules – will most enhance the site’s surroundings, and what should be avoided (See Site Context Checklist below). Studying the surroundings of the site also helps identify where opportunities may exist to link the reuse of the site with other projects in the works, or where other vacant or problem properties are located, creating potential opportunities to assemble larger sites.
