House Financial Services Committee Holds Hearing on the Livable Communities Act
09/23/10On September 23, the House Financial Services Committee held a hearing on H.R. 4690 (introduced by Representative Ed Perlmutter, CO-7) – written about below. This follows action in early August, when the Senate Banking Committee passed the companion legislation (S 1619) with a manager’s amendment that included language for a Regeneration Planning Grant program. The new program would make available grants to support sustainable, market-sensitive, and community-driven planning in communities that have lost population and are challenged with vacant properties. As Senator Dodd stated when introducing the bill, the LCA is designed to be flexible and that there’s no “one size fits all” solution to creating vital cities and regions. We believe that this bill that now explicitly addresses cities with declining population, as well as small and rural communities, will help address the unique needs of all the nation’s communities.
Now we look forward to working with Representative Perlmutter and the Financial Services Committee to ensure that the House version also addresses the needs of all cities and towns.
