Vacant and abandoned properties, the result of the demographic and economic changes the country has undergone over the past decades, adversely affect communities in many ways: physically, economically and even emotionally. If our cities, towns and metro areas – and the people within them – are to achieve their full potential, we must rethink and repurpose the abandoned buildings, houses and land that are the visible signs of change and, too often, neglect.
The Center for Community Progress, in partnership with the Cambridge Leadership Associates, provided intensive training and technical assistance for communities from four states on a variety of land reform concepts intended to unlock the value of forgotten urban land.
The training, conducted at Harvard University, explored the impact of abandonment on the urban landscape and the current housing crisis and its connection to the land use challenges in our cities. Exploring specific strategies to gain control over and redevelop abandoned property and taking into account the tremendous difficulty associated with public policy in this area, the Harvard sessions included a specific focus on the public leadership challenges that state and local officials must overcome in creating strategies for productive reuse and revitalization.
This intensive seminar will be followed by on-site technical assistance visits, which will be tailored to each community in order to assist with the strategy building and community outreach necessary to implement the various avenues of reform covered in the classroom sessions.
