Choosing Reuse Alternatives

The goal of successful reuse planning is to identify a use from among those that are realistically achievable and that provide the greatest benefit to the immediate site area and the neighborhood or city as a whole. It should take place within a framework that includes:

• Understanding the site; and
• Understanding the area, including both its conditions and any plans that exist for its future.

There may be some tension between the realities and the community’s goals, in which case a careful balancing process may be needed to determine how best to further those goals within the framework of what is realistic and feasible.
